Police Investigating Skimmer Found at a Local Trenton Business
When running a neighborhood market or running quick errands, swiping or inserting a credit card at the checkout counter is second nature. But for Frank Beltran, owner of Bienvenido Market in Trenton, a routine transaction turned into a disturbing wake-up call regarding the hidden dangers of card skimmers.
Local authorities are now investigating after a sophisticated card-skimming device was discovered planted right inside the local business.
How the Stealthy Scam Went Down
According to Beltran, the incident occurred last month when a man and a woman entered his store acting just like any other customers. While one individual engaged Beltran in conversation about an item on the top shelf behind him, the other managed to tamper with the store’s card reader.
To the naked eye, everything looked normal during the transaction. However, once the customers left and Beltran went to grab an item, he heard a strange "clacking" sound. He didn't suspect anything was wrong immediately, but once he got home, a gut feeling prompted him to review his store’s security footage.
The surveillance video revealed the shocking reality: the suspects had discreetly attached a skimming device right over his pin pad. The following morning, Beltran promptly contacted the Trenton Police Department.
Police Warning: Look Out for Deceptive Devices
Detective Lieutenant David Ordille of the Trenton Police Department warns that business owners and consumers alike need to stay vigilant. Skimming technology has evolved to the point where fraudulent devices can look nearly identical to real pin pads, making them extremely difficult to spot.
Law enforcement has shared a few critical guidelines to help consumers protect themselves from falling victim to skimmers:
* Inspect the Hardware: Check the card reader input area and give it a slight wiggle before using it to ensure nothing loose or suspicious is attached.
* Look for Hidden Cameras: Inspect the machine and surrounding surfaces for tiny holes or shiny spots where a hidden pin-hole camera might be placed to record your keystrokes.
* Cover Your Keypad: Always make it a habit to shield the keypad with your hand when entering your PIN.
* Use Tap-to-Pay: Whenever possible, use tap-to-pay options instead of inserting your card. Because card readers traditionally read information by inserting the chip into the skimmer part, tapping can add an extra layer of security.
* Monitor Your Statements: Regularly check your banking statements for any unrecognized charges, and report suspicious activity to your bank immediately.
What to Do If You've Been Targeted
If consumers believe they have been victims of improper card charges due to a skimming incident, Detective Ordille advises contacting your bank or card provider right away. Affected individuals can also file an official police report with local authorities to document the fraud.
For Beltran, sharing his story is about protecting the community. "I feel bad," Beltran said. "It just happened to me, but it can happen to anybody."
